When Victor Wembanyama got drafted by the San Antonio Spurs in 2023, everyone knew that the Spurs would be one of the league’s best sooner rather than later. However, nobody expected it to happen this quickly.
San Antonio won 62 games, took down defending champion Oklahoma City in the Western Conference Finals, and if they knew how to close games, they likely would have become NBA champions.
The Spurs showed their weaknesses at the worst time during the finals: their lack of experience and lack of playable depth. They addressed that in a big way this summer.
San Antonio is going to be even more formidable next year
The Spurs had a big draft and free agency period. They drafted Jayden Quaintance and Tarris Reed Jr. to beef up their depth behind Wembanyama. Quaintance likely won’t play much this year due to a knee injury, but Reed Jr. is ready to be a backup big right now. His high motor and strength in the paint will allow for San Antonio to survive the Wemby-less minutes.
They also brought in Maliq Brown, who was an elite defender in college, and while he is on a two-way contract, he could be brought up to the NBA quicker than expected because of his defensive prowess.
The Spurs also signed Tobias Harris in free agency to a short-term deal, giving them another veteran scoring option. Harris is a steady player that can play both the three and four positions and is a reliable floor spacer as well.
He could slot in as the starting power forward next season or he can come off the bench. Either way, Mitch Johnson has to feel good knowing that he has reliable wings in Devin Vassell, Julian Champagnie, and now Harris.
Not to mention, San Antonio also has their other young guys like Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, and Carter Bryant. Castle and Harper looked lethal together last season and looks like the backcourt of the future for the Spurs. Bryant always needed some time to develop, but he is one big offseason away from being a rotation fixture. More improvements from those three will also go a long way, especially from Harper.
San Antonio rounded out their depth and are set to be a juggernaut again next year. This is a roster that is built for the playoffs now more than ever. They got the experience they needed last season and are set to come with a vengeance this coming year.
