The Los Angeles Lakers have a few glaring roster issues that need fixing, and they could solve them this summer. The Lakers need a starting center, and rumor has it that they may be targeting Toronto Raptors big man Jakob Poeltl.
This is according to Hoops Hype's Mike Scotto. Poeltl could be available if the Raptors pick 7-2 center Kharman Maluach, who is rumored to have received a draft promise from the team. That could pave the way for them to trade Poeltl this summer. Moreover, he could fetch a first-round pick given his skill as a finisher and screen setter.
Poeltl is also a terrific defender and rebounder, even a good passer. That would make him a great fit playing alongside two superstars in Luka Dončić and LeBron James.
Can the Los Angeles Lakers trade for Jakob Poeltl?
The Lakers could trade the expiring contracts of Gabe Vincent and Maxi Kleber, as well as a 2031 top-3 protected first-round pick, for Poeltl. The move could potentially prove beneficial for both sides. The Raptors would get a first-round pick and flexibility for a player that might not factor into their long-term plans if they are planning on drafting Maluach.
Meanwhile, the Lakers would add a terrific starting center who can shore up their weaknesses defensively and on the glass. If they can also convince free agents such as Clint Capela or Brook Lopez to take less to play in L.A., they would dramatically improve their weakest position.
Poeltl and Capella, or Lopez, would be a more than serviceable center rotation that would allow the Lakers to protect the paint and hold their own against the league's best centers. It would cost them a first-round pick, but it could be worth it in the long run, with them solving their biggest flaw that cost them a deep playoff run this season.
Or, the Lakers could simply pursue both Capela and Lopez, potentially signing both and filling their hole at center. That would keep them from having to give up a first-round pick. That may be the more preferable option, but if they can't get those players to take less, then Poeltl should be on their radar.
Ultimately, the Raptors could be willing to trade their current starting center, Jakob Poeltl. If they are, then the Lakers could and should be interested. This is given their need for a starting center and the potential ease of making a trade for him.
