It appears that San Antonio Spurs fans won't have to wait long for a potential big offseason move. According to Phoenix Suns insider John Gambadoro, the San Antonio Spurs could trade for Kevin Durant before the 2025 NBA draft.

Gambo also reports that the Spurs could ship Devin Vassell and Harrison Barnes plus picks in a potential Durant trade. Additionally, he states that Durant himself believes that he will end up with the Spurs.

Combine that with another report, this time by ESPN insider Brian Windhorst on the Hoops Collective Podcast, in which he states that he expects Durant to be moved before the June 25th draft. That means there could be a big Durant trade in the next two weeks.

The Spurs have all the assets they need to try and make a blockbuster trade. But after landing the second overall pick, they appeared willing to hold on to their assets and continue to build steadily through the draft. Then again, if they can trade Vassell, Barnes, and the 14th pick for Durant, then they absolutely should.

Should the San Antonio Spurs trade for Kevin Durant?

The Spurs would have a perfect frontcourt fit between Durant and superstar Victor Wembanyama. That is hard to dispute with both players being elite defensively and perfectly complementing each other on offense. Durant is still an elite offensive weapon, after averaging 26.8 points while drilling 38% from deep on 6.0 attempts per game.

That would potentially give the Spurs a second or third scoring option, with De'Aaron Fox also helping to carry the offense alongside Wembanyama. Defensively, Durant's length resulted in him posting one of the best defensive field goal percentages in the NBA, with opponents struggling to shoot over him.

Combine that with Wembanyama, who evolved into an efficient high-volume three-point shooter last season and a dominant rim protector, and the Spurs could be a problem. Having Wembanyama set off-ball screens to free Durant up for open looks or having Wembanyama pop out and knock down open threes would be almost impossible to stop.

The Spurs could also run pick-and-roll with Fox and Wembanyama, with Fox being able to accelerate to the basket, forcing defenses to collapse and freeing up Durant for open looks. The Spurs could even use Wembanyama more in the post with teams unable to swarm him with their best perimeter defenders glued to Durant and Fox.

All in all, the Spurs appear to be the most likely landing spot for Durant this summer. And if rumors are true, a trade could happen in the next two weeks.
