After having signed with the Philadelphia 76ers, the Sixers have already given LeBron James something the Los Angeles Lakers never could. LeBron shocked the NBA world when he chose the Sixers over the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers.
But, as the dust has settled, his decision makes a lot more sense. Philly is absolutely brimming with talent, with stars Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and Jaylen Brown plus promising prospect V.J. Edgecombe.
Playing alongside three all-stars and a top prospect makes the Sixers—dare I say—a super team. Ironically, the Lakers could never put a team like that together with LeBron in Los Angeles.
Sixers have granted LeBron James something the Lakers never could
The Lakers did build a championship team around LeBron and Anthony Davis, but that wasn't a super team. Instead, it was two stars and several veterans. However, the Sixers have more star power and don't have an aging supporting cast.
Actually, LeBron is the aging supporting cast and part of the reason he probably chose the Sixers over the Cavs or Heat. The Sixers would be a great team without him, but adding him could make them a legit championship contender.
The Lakers couldn't offer him anything near that, even with Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, so he dipped and took his talents to the City of Brotherly Love.
LeBron may make the 76ers a legit championship contender
Despite the East being far better than the years past, the Sixers seem positioned to be among the best in the conference. They will, of course, have to go head to head against the defending champion New York Knicks.
But, at least on paper, the Sixes seemingly match up well. Ironically, the Boston Celtics, who had the second-best record in the East last season, made it all possible. They traded Brown to the Sixers, which enticed LeBron to join Philadelphia.
That proved to be a fantastic move for the Sixers and a horrible one for the Celtics. LeBron probably isn't mad, however, with him signing a two-year minimum contract to join a ready-made contender.
He appears resigned to close out his career in Philadelphia and may even have two chances at winning a championship to round out his Hall of Fame resume.
