Coming into the season, everyone knew that this would be a pivotal season for Scoot Henderson. The third overall pick in 2023 had shown flashes of who he could be, but was never able to put it together on a consistent basis.
He needed to show in his third season that he could be part of Portland’s future, but his season debut was delayed by four months due to a torn hamstring he suffered in offseason workouts.Â
Henderson didn’t make his debut until February 6th, but averaged 14 points per game, three rebounds, and four assists. His jumper looked improved, his decision-making was better, and was a big reason why the Blazers were able to push for the play-in and earn the seventh seed. Now, he has continued that momentum into the playoffs.
Scoot Henderson has been fantastic for Portland against San Antonio
With the Spurs focusing all of their defensive attention on Deni Avdija, Henderson has been able to take full advantage. He came into game four averaging 23 points per game on 57 percent shooting and 52 percent from three-point range.Â
He has been attacking the rim relentlessly and his burst has been difficult for San Antonio to deal with. Henderson has seen a lot of one-on-one matchups whenever he has the ball and he has taken full advantage.
The one thing that has been on full display though has been his motor. Henderson has been full-go at all times during this series. He has been such a nice fit to Jrue Holiday in the backcourt, allowing Holiday to take on traditional PG duties at times, and for Henderson to thrive in that scoring guard role, but also as a floor general. That may be the formula for his long-term future with the Blazers, especially with Damian Lillard making his return next season.Â
Portland may be down 3-1 and Henderson did have a rough game four outing, but the future is bright for them, after spending the last couple years in the basement. Through this playoff run, they have been able to see what their foundation could look like and who is a true part of their young core.
Henderson does have more to prove and show in a full season next year, but it is extremely encouraging that he has shown his game can translate in his playoff debut. With a full offseason and better health luck, Henderson has a chance to finally realize his potential.
