New York Knicks fans won't have to wait long to see their new-look roster in action with the start of training camp just weeks away and the preseason less than a month away. New York had a blockbuster summer, including trading for star Mikal Bridges, re-signing OG Anunoby, and extending superstar Jalen Brunson to a below-market-average deal.
That has many believing that the Knicks are contenders and that they have a strong chance of winning the Eastern Conference next season. Even so, their roster still needs minor tweaks to ensure they can live up to their full potential, with the most pressing need at the backup center.
While there are a few options that the Knicks could pursue in the trade market, Portland Trail Blazers big man Robert Williams appears to be a perfect trade target.
The New York Knicks were just gifted a terrific trade target in Robert Williams by the Portland Blazers.
At the moment, the Blazers have at least four centers on their roster, including Deandre Ayton, 2024 7th overall pick Donovan Clingan, and Williams. That makes him a logical trade target for the Knicks, with him unlikely to be a part of their regular rotation and returning after missing most of last season with an injury. ESPN's Brian Windhorst recently reported as much.
Although Williams has a long injury history, he is a terrific athlete and defensive player who could be impactful on the Knicks bench next season. Better still, given his lack of trade value, the Blazers likely won't be able to command a first-round pick for him and the Knicks may probably get away with offering a second or two in a deal for him.
New York would likely have to part with Detroit's top four protected 2025 second-round pick, as well as Deuce McBride, Keita Bates-Diop, and Precious Achiuwa, but they'd have just enough to acquire Williams. However, they would have to wait until October 28th, when Achiuwa is eligible to be traded.
Having both Mitchell Robinson and Williams at center would give New York an athletic and mobile frontline that may help them defensively. With Bridges and Anunoby also on the perimeter, they would have a chance to be a top-10 defensive team next season. That would also improve their chances of a deep playoff run. As a result, the Knicks should kick the tires on trading for Williams.
