After watching as his longtime teammate Klay Thompson left to join the Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry appears less certain about his future with the team. The Warriors failed to come to terms on a new deal with Thompson after 13 seasons in Golden State and while Curry isn't guaranteed to follow suit, his latest comments leave the door open for him to play elsewhere one day.
Curry has two years left on his current contract and will be extension-eligible after next season. By that time he will be 37 years old, and 38 were he to hit free agency. With the NBA's age limit set at 38 for max contracts, Curry won't get a max extension, but he could still command big money in his late 30s.
Will Steph Curry eventually leave the Golden State Warriors?
Curry's contract situation is different from Thompson's situation since Curry is still playing at a high level and the Warriors are clearly still trying to build around him. Letting Thompson leave was a means to try and keep flexibility or risk the Warriors being limited by the second apron.
The Warriors tried to use that flexibility to trade for Paul George to pair him with Curry. When that failed, they waived Chris Paul and made moves like trading for Kyle Anderson and Buddy Hield to keep the team relevant as they try to figure out their next move. That next move might include them trading for Lauri Markkanen or another star.
Those moves suggest that they are still working to remain competitive even as their best player ages. With Curry turning 37 during next season, time is running out for them to build another contender with Curry.
The important thing to keep in mind is that they appear to be trying, which bodes well for his future in Golden State. They'll, of course, have come to terms on an extension but Warriors fans should be more optimistic that that will happen, even though Curry's comments may suggest otherwise.
