Don't look now but a polarizing Laker is set to obliterate a 30-year-old team record

With less than a month remaining in the regular season, the Los Angeles Lakers are finally beginning to click and at the right time. Since the start of February, the Lakers have been an impressive 12-5 and have gone from battling just making the play-in tournament to being only 2.5 games out of the sixth seed in the Western Conference. That mid-season surge has been spurred by an unlikely player, D'Angelo Russell.

Over Russell's last 10 games, he's averaging an impressive 21 points per game while shooting a blistering 45% from three as well as 5.7 assists. That isn't just a small sample size; however, Russell has averaged 21.6 points, 6.3 assists, and 3.0 rebounds in 29 games in 2024.

That production has given the Lakers a boost, even recently helping them knock off the Milwaukee Bucks without LeBron James. That win helps Los Angeles keep pace in the Western Conference as they attempt to make a postseason push. Now Russell is closing in on a 30-year-old record.

Lost in Russell's sizzling scoring output since January is that he is rapidly approaching former Lakers all-star Nick Van Exel's single-season 3-point record. Van Exel's single-season 3-point record is set at 183 made triples and Russell has 16 games left to hit 11 threes. Considering that he is averaging nearly three made threes per game, he is on pace to hit 218 shots from deep.

Assuming that he not only breaks the record but becomes the first Laker to crack 200 made threes, then that would be quite an accomplishment. After all, Los Angeles considered trading Russell ahead of the trade deadline but his play has helped to energize them and he could rewrite the Lakers record books in the process.

Ultimately, Russell's play over the last six weeks has helped L.A. make up ground in the standings. Not only that but he is set to break a 30-year-old 3-point record, proving that he is having a terrific season.
