NBA Trades: Warriors throw caution to the wind in a risky proposed deal with the Bulls
The proposed deal would see the Warriors trade Kevon Looney, Gary Payton II, and Andrew Wiggins for Zach Lavine and two second-round picks. That deal would dramatically alter both teams, with the Warriors swapping out three rotation players for LaVine.
The Bulls would also certainly look to trade those players if they were to acquire them, which would help them get off of the remaining three years on LaVine's contract worth $138 million. While that is an ugly contract, Wiggins' contract isn't well-desired either, and the Warriors considered waiving Looney before picking up his option, possibly to use his salary in a trade.
Moving them for LaVine is risky, to say the least, but when healthy, he is a talented and efficient scorer thanks to his impressive shooting. However, he has had left knee surgery and, more recently, surgery on his right foot, and while he is only 29, there is a question of whether he can be the player he once was.
There is also risk for the Bulls, who would be replacing LaVine's contract with three smaller ones that are roughly equivalent. If they carry Wiggins, Payton II, and Looney into the season with the intention of trading them, they might help a team that should be tanking with less experienced players.
With both teams having reasons to agree to the deal and reasons not to, is this trade practical? We'll examine the deal from the Bulls perspective next.
