NBA Trades: The Nuggets solve major roster flaws in tempting mock deal with Hawks.
The mock deal would see the Nuggets ship Michael Porter Jr. and Zeki Nnaji to the Hawks in exchange for De'Andre Hunter and Bogdan Bogdanovic. That would be a major shakeup for both teams, specifically for Denver. Getting two starting-caliber players and getting off of Nnaji's ugly contract for MPJ might make sense, especially given luxury tax concerns.
Denver will have to continue to avoid the second apron and they will not only address their depth issue but also save at least $8 million in the process in each of the next two seasons. The Hawks, on the other hand, are in a different position. They can't tank but they may not be good enough to make the postseason.
While they can use next season to develop young players such as Jalen Johnson and number one overall pick Zaccharie Risacher, they could also look to retool by moving some of the better players in an attempt to build around Trae Young. Acquiring a player such as Porter Jr., who is talented but perhaps inconsistent and may thrive playing in a larger role elsewhere.
Trading two players that don't figure to be a part of their future for one that does, in addition to receiving a first, may make sense to the Hawks. Both teams have reasons for doing the deal but would they? Next, we'll see if the Nuggets will agree to the trade.
