NBA Trades: Spurs and Pelicans add starters; OKC lands a star in potential Jazz deal

Despite the San Antonio Spurs, Utah Jazz, New Orleans Pelicans, and Oklahoma City Thunder having differing goals, this bold 4-team deal would help each team.

Would the San Antonio Spurs agree to the deal?

Although it might seem like a terrible idea for the Spurs to help out a likely future rival in the Thunder, this proposal could help San Antonio get back into playoff contention. Dort is a strong defensive player with him also improving as a shooter, knocking down 39.5% of his threes last season.

That would make him an ideal small forward option for the Spurs, even though they just acquired Harrison Barnes. The Spurs' acquisition of Barnes gives them plenty of depth on the perimeter with Barnes, Keldon Johnson, fourth overall pick Stephon Castle, and Julian Champagnie.

It also makes Johnson expendable. Adding Dort to the mix might seem like an odd fit but the Spurs don't have a backup power forward and Barnes is better as a four than a three, making him the ideal option to fill that role off the bench.

Swapping Johnson and multiple seconds for Dort might make sense considering that Johnson doesn't necessarily fit on the Spurs roster, with him being an inconsistent shooter and a middling defender. After coming off the bench for most of last season, he doesn't appear to be in their long-term plans.

Compare that to Dort who is a terrific three-and-d wing who will make between $16.5 million and $17.7 million over the final three years of his deal, and he'd be a better fit.

Overall, the proposed deal makes some sense for each team. The Spurs get a starter, the Thunder get a star, the Pelicans get a center, and the Jazz get a huge influx on picks, making it a possibility.
