NBA Trades: Hawks shake up roster in daring proposed deal with Pelicans
By Ari Schwartz
The Atlanta Hawks are in a tough spot heading into the offseason after an underwhelming 2023–24 campaign. They finished with just 36 wins and were eliminated by the Chicago Bulls in the play-in tournament.
This marks the second season of the Trae Young and Dejounte Murray pairing, which hasn't shown much promise with only two playoff wins as a duo. It is expected that Atlanta will move on from one of Young or Murray this summer and build around the other.
While ideally you could move one or both of Murray and Young and transition into a full rebuild, Atlanta does not own most of their draft capital over the next few years, meaning they won't be able to build up the roster through the draft. This is because they owe San Antonio unprotected picks in 2025 and 2027, as well as a pick swap in 2026 from the Murray trade in 2022.
Therefore, it appears a retool is more likely than an all-out rebuild for the Hawks. Here is a mock trade that would see them move one of their stars in exchange for another star who could help Atlanta bounce back next season.
