2) Donovan Mitchell
If the Spurs opt not to pursue Young or Atlanta's asking price is too high, then they might set their sights on Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Donovan Mitchell. Mitchel is reportedly unwilling to sign an extension this summer, which means that next season will be the last year of his contract.
The Cavaliers would potentially move him this offseason as a result or risk letting him leave for nothing. By trading him this summer, they can get maximum value, and for the Spurs, he may actually be a cheaper alternative to Young.
Young is under contract for the next two seasons, and the Hawks may demand all of their picks back in return for him, and San Antonio would be wise to keep at least one of those selections given their possible value.
On the other hand, Mitchell has one year remaining and may cost less. Especially since he can choose his next team since whoever tries to trade for him would need a commitment that he is willing to sign an extension.
For instance, the Detroit Pistons might want to acquire him, but if they learn that he is unwilling to sign an extension, then no dice. With Wembanyama in San Antonio, he probably would, and the Spurs would get an elite offensive player who can both take over games and take pressure off and draw attention away from Wembanyama. That would only make things easier and help him reach his full potential.
