The Dallas Mavericks have been one of the big winners in free agency so far, with several smart moves made to improve their team after making the NBA Finals last season. They added Quinton Grimes, Klay Thompson, and Nnaji Marshall to replace Josh Green, Tim Hardaway Jr., and Derrick Jones Jr.

The Mavs upgrading three of their rotation players after having limited assets is impressive and possibly significant. In fact, it may also be enough to push them over the top after they came up short against the Boston Celtics but Dallas doesn't appear to be done making moves in free agency just yet.

According to NBA insider Mike Scotto, they are pursuing two former Mavericks guards, Dennis Smith Jr. and Spencer Dinwiddie. The Mavericks actually drafted Smith Jr. back in 2018 but he failed to pan out and was ultimately traded to the New York Knicks in the Kristaps Porzingis deal. However, he later developed into a strong defender and was able to carve out a role in the NBA. Nevertheless, he remains unsigned, as does Dinwiddie.

The Dallas Mavericks may unite with a former guard.

Scotto points out that the Mavs aren't looking to bring back both players; instead, they are apparently hoping to sign one to provide them with depth at point guard. Between the two, Dinwiddie may be the more in-demand player but both would likely be available for the minimum.

He may prefer to play on a contender and returning to the Mavericks, where he would have a chance to win a championship, would seem to be a possibility. While neither Smith Jr. nor Dinwiddie would probably move the needle very much next season, having proven players ready to step in and play is a luxury and would only bolster the Mavericks.

All in all, Dallas has dramatically improved over the summer, but they are still looking to add to their roster. That could include bringing back a former player in Smith Jr. or Dinwiddie.
