It may be the worst kept secret around the NBA that the league will soon announce their expansion plans. So far, Las Vegas and Seattle are the frontrunners for new teams and there appears to be increasing momentum for Seattle in particular. Seattle, despite not currently having a team, previously had one for more than 40 years before it was relocated to Oklahoma City.

That was despite being very popular with a loyal fanbase, a championship, and multiple stars having played for the team. Now, the league seems determined to add a team in Seattle to not only make up for the mistake of leaving but also to the potential revenue that it can provide.

When the original team left in 2008, companies like Amazon, which is headquartered there, weren't what they are today. In fact, Seattle is now home to several large companies such as Boeing, Microsoft Corporation, Costco, Nordstrom, REI, and even Starbucks.

All of that makes them an appealing city to put a team in and the latest news surrounding Seattle and expansion gives us more details about their potential return.

NBA expansion news about the return of the Seattle Supersonics should get fans excited.

While that has yet to be officially confirmed, many suspect that if Seattle were to get an expansion team, they would also be named the Supersonics. However, according to ESPN, if that were to happen, the Oklahoma City Thunder would relinquish part of their team history. Having Seattle acquire their Supersonics nickname and reclaim their history would be as if they hadn't left.

The Charlotte Hornets were in a similar situation when the original team relocated to New Orleans. Two years after they left, the Charlotte Bobcats became the NBA's 30th team. After 10 years, and after New Orleans changed their nickname to the Pelicans, Charlotte went back to being known as the Hornets and their records were restored.

Officially, their two seasons without are listed as "inactive." The same thing could happen with the Seattle Supersonics but with them likely to be inactive for 20 years before they play another game.

Even so, it seems increasingly likely that the Seattle Supersonics will soon return and that will be great news for fans of the original team as well as new residents of the city and state. Even the NBA in general, which will only continue to grow by adding new markets.
