NBA Rumors: Knicks eyeing veteran sharpshooter to complete roster overhaul
By Cal Durrett
The new-look The New York Knicks have been one of the big winners of the NBA offseason so far after trading for star Mikal Bridges and re-signing OG Anunoby. Be that as it may, they don't appear to be done making moves, with them reportedly eyeing an elite defensive player and now, according to Hoops Hype's Mike Scotto, veteran sharpshooter Davis Bertans.
Bertans played for the Oklahoma City Thunder last season before being traded to the Charlotte Hornets in a deal that included Gordon Hayward. Although Bertans wasn't impactful on either team, he is still among the best shooters in the NBA and might be worth an end-of-bench spot on the Knicks.
Should the New York Knicks sign Davis Bertans?
The Knicks have two open roster spots and filling them with a veteran who has a specialized skill makes sense. That being said, New York's rotation appears to be all but set for next season and Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau is known to play his starters big minutes.
That likely means that whoever they sign with the final roster spots likely won't play much, if any, next season outside of garbage town. Nevertheless, having a deep bench is always a positive, even if Thibodeau may not rely on it next season.
With the free agency market drying up as well as the available money, New York may still have other options. After all, players who may be willing to settle for a minimum contract would likely consider joining the Knicks over another team, with New York seemingly having a strong chance of making the NBA Finals.
Still, New York already has a talented starting five and a four-man bench rotation that looks as good as any contender. Therefore, pursuing a player such as Bertans makes sense given that he may be willing to accept a small role.
