Knicks rookie proves he's NBA-ready with under-the-radar Summer League showing
By Cal Durrett
The new-look The New York Knicks have done a terrific job of improving their roster and appear to be a title contender on paper. However, one of their lesser-known roster additions was Tyler Koleck, who was taken 34th overall despite being seen by many as one of the best point guards in the draft. Thus far, he has proven that with his strong NBA Summer League play.
Through his three Summer League games, Koleck has impressed with his advanced court vision and passing, as well as his craft as a scorer, averaging 11.3 points and 7.3 assists per game. That might not blow people away, but he looks to be a pure point guard who can create in the pick and roll by attacking off the dribble, collapsing defenses, and locating open shooters.
Against the Sacramento Kings, he tallied 21 points and 8 assists and hit the go-ahead shot and free throw to seal a Knicks win. Although it is only the summer league, he appears to be an excellent pick for the Knicks, giving them yet another off-season win.
Can Tyler Kolek crack the New York Knicks rotation as a rookie next season?
With Jalen Brunson, Miles McBride, and Cam Payne at point guard for the Knicks and coach Tom Thibodeau's tendency to play starters big minutes, there may not be much time for Kolek initially. However, the Knicks struggled to stay healthy post-all-star break and through the playoffs so having a rookie that is capable of stepping in and playing is a luxury.
Especially one that is on a super cheap rookie contract. More likely, Kolek could compete for a spot in the rotation in year two. Even though he seems NBA-ready based on his play so far this summer, he will likely get more reps in the G-League in the hopes that he can round out his game and improve further.
All in all, the early returns for Knicks rookie Tyler Kolek have been encouraging. Although he might not play much next season, he appears to be a great pick for the Knicks as they continue to improve their roster this summer.
