Grade the Trade: Does the deal make sense for the Atlanta Hawks?

The Hawks path forward is a confusing one. They don't own their first-round picks in the next three drafts, despite being a middling team. Most teams would tank in their position but that isn't an option so they can continue on and hope that 2024 number one overall pick Zaccharie Risacher pans out quickly to give them more options. He doesn't seem like he will be an immediate help and the Hawks haven't been a free agency or a trade destination, giving them limited options.

Then there is the fact that Young can become a free agent in two seasons, forcing them to make a decision on his future relatively soon. His value is apparently lower than Dejounte Murray's, with Murray netting them two firsts and a recent lottery pick. Trading their best player for anything less would be a mistake on their part.

In the proposed deal, they would technically get a better haul with them potentially acquiring Black, who was the sixth pick in 2023, a starting-caliber center in Carter Jr. and two firsts. On one hand, that is apparently a better than market-value haul for Young and would give the Hawks a total of four firsts and two recent lottery picks to try and rebuild with.

On the other hand, by moving Young and presumably Clint Capela and Bogdan Bogdanovic, the Hawks would bottom out without having a first-round pick and that would be embarrassing with the San Antonio Spurs reaping the rewards of their tanking. At the moment, the Hawks would probably say no but if Black looks better and Atlanta is going to be terrible anyway, then they may reconsider the deal at the trade deadline.

All in all, the trade is a fair one, with the Magic giving up several very good assets to try and improve the team while the Hawks receiving more than they might otherwise get for Young. Although the Hawks may not agree to the deal this summer, it might be something they consider next season. As a result, this deal gets a B-.
