8) Donovan Clingan

Connecticut center Donovan Clingan has seen his name skyrocket up the draft board in recent weeks and is even a potential top-5 pick. He is known for his elite defense and has even drawn comparisons to four-time Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert.

While that may be the case, he'd make for an awkward fit long-term with the Spurs for several reasons. For one, Wembanyama was far better once he became the team's center full-time.

Therefore, the Spurs drafting Clingan in the top 5 would mean that they would be committing to playing tall ball for the next several seasons. That might work since San Antonio would have two elite rim protectors, though Wembanyama would be playing away from the rim while Clingan would have to play drop coverage in the pick and roll.

There would also be questions about his fit on offense. Wembanyama showed flashes of being an elite shot maker from the perimeter but that isn't quite a given just yet and if he isn't, then the Spurs would suddenly have limited spacing.

It would also lead to questions about 2022 10th overall pick Jeremy Sochan's future. He is widely seen as the starting power forward of the future but drafting Clingan would probably push him to the bench. If he is the best player available, then San Antonio might consider selecting him, but his fit probably isn't the best.
