No-brainer Kyrie Irving-to-Wolves trade package is too good for Mavs to refuse

This deal makes plenty of since for the Mavs

The Dallas Mavericks are clearly hitting the reset button on their franchise after the recent hiring of team president Masai Ujuri and the firing of coach Jason Kidd. Those moves signal a reset around rising star, 2025 first overall pick, Cooper Flagg.

That could also mean that star point guard Kyrie Irving could be traded this offseason, and they may already have a potential trade partner. The Minnesota Timberwolves are in desperate need of a starting point guard.

They could see Irving as the perfect trade target. However, it could cost them, with Ujuri being known as a shrewd negotiator.

Note* The Timberwolves can't trade their 2026 first until the NBA Draft and their 2033 first until early July, but the trade can be agreed to in principle before then.

Dallas Mavericks may trade Kyrie Irving to the Minnesota Timberwolves

The proposed trade would see the Mavericks ship out Irving to the Timberwolves in exchange for Julius Randle and two first-round picks.

Randle had a poor showing in the playoffs and wouldn't fit the Mavericks' future plans. Nevertheless, getting two first-round picks for acquiring him and trading Irving would be a no-brainer for them.

While Irving is still a valuable player, he is 34 years old and missed all of this season with an ACL tear. Getting two first-round picks for him would be great for Ujuri and the Mavs and help their rebuild.

Would the Mavericks agree to the trade?

Barring another team offering more than two first-round picks for Irving, it seems like a smart move that can help both teams. We've seen plenty of trades like this in the past where a rebuilding team agrees to trade a good player for another on a questionable contract.

Those bad teams often get back a first-round pick they can use to help fast-track their rebuild. That's exactly what this trade could do for the Mavericks.

The only thing better would be if Randle plays well in Dallas and they are eventually able to trade him again to another team for yet another pick. Even if it doesn't happen, this trade would make sense to both the Mavericks and the Timberwolves.
