We're now in the "dog days" of the NBA offseason, with all the big dominos of the NBA season having come and gone... Except one: LeBron James. Even at this late stage of his career, James still draws strong attention from the NBA limelight.
Ever since announcing he wouldn't return to the Los Angeles Lakers, many NBA teams have flocked to obtain the four-time champion's services. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the top three teams for James are the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Philadelphia Sixers.
With that said, let's look at the case for and against each top destination for the king.
The Philadelphia 76ers' pitch for LeBron James
At Fanatics Fest last week, James said, "Trust the process," sending the media into a frenzy over whether he was foreshadowing his move to the city of "Brotherly Love."
The Sixers have had an eventful offseason that included trading Paul George for All-NBA forward Jaylen Brown and signing Dean Wade from the Cavaliers to increase their wing depth. Additionally, they strengthened their bench backcourt depth by signing Anfernee Simons and Caleb Love while drafting LaBaron Philon to run the second unit.
They also signed former New York Knicks big man Ariel Hukporti to add frontcourt depth with Andre Drummond departing for New York.
That's not even including the Sixers' main foundational pieces originally, such as All-NBA guard Tyrese Maxey, who's coming off a career season, or the precocious rookie V.J. Edgecombe. Of course, we can't forget former MVP Joel Embiid, who's still a star player when healthy.
James fits perfectly with the Sixers due to his ability to play off the ball as a second or third option, alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves last season for the Lakers. His usage rate last season (27.2) was the lowest of his career, showcasing his ability to play off-ball and adapt to what this team needs in the twilight of his career.
If James were to join Brown, Maxey, Edgecombe, and Embiid, it'd make for one of the most dynamic offenses in the league, as you'd have four three-level scorers who can operate at an efficient level.
The case against LeBron James signing with the Sixers
Can Embiid stay healthy? He's only played 60 or more games twice in a decade and has averaged 32 games per season since winning MVP in 2023. He'll also be playing with the most capable ball handlers he's ever played with ; Jaylen Brown, Maxey, and Edgecombe can all create their own shots.
However, all have shown to be effective without the ball. Brown proved it by playing alongside Jayson Tatum and Maxey, who played alongside a prime Embiid.
Overall, if James were to sign with the Sixers, they would instantly have the deepest team in the Eastern Conference and be considered the favorites to come out of the conference.
