NBA Rumors: Nightmare Kawhi Leonard scenario threatens to derail Raptors summer

The Toronto Raptors are still hoping to acquire former franchise star Kawhi Leonard, but the latest rumors could throw a wrench into those plans. According to the Athletics' John Hollinger, the Leonard investigation could drag on until October and the start of training camp.

In that case, Gradey Dick and Brandon Ingram could still be members of the team entering training camp. Hopefully that won't be the case and the Raptors can land Leonard.

However, that now appears to be very much up in the air as the NBA's investigation drags on.

The Raptors are a limbo as they await the completion of the investigation

It's unfortunate that the Raptors are being dragged into the Clippers' and Leonard's mess. For their sake, the investigation won't drag on into October, which could seriously affect their preseason preparation.

However, they should prepare for other possibilities. One being that Leonard has his contract voided by the NBA. In that case, the Raptors still could sign Leonard but only on a one-year deal.

The other option could be that Leonard gets suspended for part of next season. That could actually benefit the Raptors.

There may be a silver lining in the kawhi Leonard trade mess

If Leonard gets suspended for part of next season, the Raptors could renegotiate the trade terms with the Clippers. In which case, they may be able to hold on to a pick or two and still add Leonard.

Even if he were to get suspended for, say, 20 games that could actually help Toronto. Remember, Leonard may probably only play 60 regular season games anyway, so a suspension may actually keep him healthy.

Still, Toronto is probably hoping for final word from the NBA so they can get on with their summer. I still expect them to end up with Leonard. It just may take longer than expected.
