Just when you thought the Kawhi Leonard situation couldn't get any more dramatic, new rumors threaten the blockbuster Toronto Raptors and LA Clippers trade.
That trade is currently on hold while the NBA continues its investigation into Leonard and the Clippers. However, new information has surfaced that could further derail the trade.
Per The Athletic, the NBA is investigating another endorsement deal, aside from the one that allegedly paid Leonard $28 million off the books. If that is proven to be true, then Leonard and the Clippers could be in for a world of hurt.
The Clippers-Raptors Kawhi Leonard trade hangs in the balance
The Clippers and the Raptors are still hoping to complete an already agreed-to blockbuster trade. The potential deal would see Toronto trade Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two first-round picks, and two second-round picks for Leonard.
However, the NBA has already warned the Raptors that they could be indirectly punished by acquiring Leonard. Thus, they wisely pressed pause on the deal.
After all, Leonard could be suspended by the NBA for at least part of next season. Or his contract could be voided altogether. Either option could be bad news for the Clippers and good for the Raptors.
If he is suspended for part of next season, Toronto could perhaps get one or two of their picks back from the Clippers in the shelved trade. Then again, if Leonard's contract gets voided, the Raptors could use their mid-level exception.
The Raptors should secretly be hoping for Kawhi Leonard to be punished
In which case, they could offer him a two-year deal with a player option for the second year. How ironic would it be for the Raptors to sign Leonard away from the Clippers?
Much like how the Clippers signed him away from Toronto. That could technically happen. It's also worth mentioning that Leonard was just spotted hanging out with Raptors officials.
That strongly suggests that he may end up back in Toronto. No matter what punishment comes down from the NBA.
For the Clippers part, having his contract voided would be a nightmare scenario. They are so close to trading him for positive assets only to potentially lose him for nothing.
Worse yet, the NBA could strip Los Angeles of their remaining first-round picks and pick swaps. We'll ultimately have to wait until the NBA makes a decision, but both the Clippers and Raptors are likely anxious to know the outcome.
