The Golden State Warriors are widely expected to make a big trade to try and bolster their roster, but new intel calls that into question. The Warriors already made a move by bringing in former Brooklyn Nets guard Dennis Schröder, giving them more playmaking and scoring.
However, that hasn't helped them much in the standings, with them currently just 10th in the West and only a game up on the San Antonio Spurs for 12th place. With them in need of more help, that makes a report by the Athletics' Sam Amick all the more surprising.
According to Amick, the Warriors are unlikely to trade fourth-year forward Jonathan Kuminga. Also, they aren't interested in offering Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler a contract extension.
That means that they are unlikely to trade for him since he will be an unrestricted free agent after this season. Not trading Kuminga and not trading for Butler seems like a big mistake for the Warriors, who are still far from being a true title contender.
Kuminga has been playing some of the best basketball of his career of late, but there is a looming possibility that he could be stolen away by a team with cap space in restricted free agency this summer. That makes the decision for the Warriors to keep him rather than include him in a deal for a star all the more puzzling.
Latest Warriors trade intel has them on the verge of making two huge mistakes.
While the Warriors can match any contract offer to him this summer, teams such as the Brooklyn Nets or Detroit Pistons could intentionally front-load a contract offer. That would make it especially damaging to Golden State's salary situation.
That would potentially force them to pay far more to keep him than they otherwise would have had they actually agreed to a contract extension earlier this season.
Worse yet, them not being willing to extend Butler likely means that Warriors fans can cross his name off their trade wishlist. That leaves few star options for them to pursue. That could mean that they have shifted to another tier of available trade targets. That could include Chicago Bulls center Nikola Vucevic, who is having a strong season.
While he may not help them become a contender once again, he is a skilled offensive big man who can score both inside and out and dominate on the glass. That is something that they are missing and could be helpful.
Still, them holding onto Kuminga, knowing that they will likely have to spend far more to keep him this summer, is a baffling decision. So is their unwillingness to extend Butler, essentially taking them out of the running to land them. It's a questionable strategy, but we'll see what they can do to improve their team between now and the deadline.
