The Los Angeles Lakers' season is still far from over, but new rumors may have fans eying this summer. According to Chris B. Haynes, Anthony Davis' future in Washington is still up in the air. That leaves the door open for a possible Lakers reunion.
Davis was traded for Luka Doncic a season and a half ago and has only played 29 games since then as a member of the Dallas Mavericks and Washington Wizards. With him getting up there in age, he appears skeptical about the direction of the Wizards.
If he doesn't buy in, then he may seek a trade this offseason with him entering the final year of his contract. Given how low his value is at the moment, the Lakers may consider bringing him back to L.A. Doing so comes with obvious risks, namely injuries, though he could be the perfect fit next to Luka Doncic.
How realistic is an Anthony Davis reunion with the Lakers?
Davis seems unsold about his future in Washington, and the Wizards are still rebuilding. Therefore, they may be open to trading him if he is unwilling to sign an extension.
The Lakers could have at least $50 million in cap space so they could potentially absorb most, if not all, of his salary in a trade without sending a player back. They could then re-sign Austin Reaves and possibly even bring back LeBron James.
In that scenario, the Lakers would be paring Doncic, with Reaves, Davis, and LeBron together in the hopes they'd have enough to win it all.
Should the Lakers trade for Anthony Davis this summer?
The Lakers are facing the prospect of having to rebuild their roster around Doncic and Reaves, with LeBron possibly not returning. Having $50 million in cap space would help them build a better-fitting roster.
However, a healthy AD is better than anyone they'd be able to sign in free agency. They should strongly consider bringing Davis back but only if they don't have to give up any picks and can absorb his contract in a trade this summer.
That may be possible with his value at an all-time low. Ultimately, if Davis doesn't want to be in Washington and the Lakers are willing, a reunion between player and team may be in the cards.
