The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to build their future around Luka Dončić. He is on the way to being the league's top scorer this season.

But a controversial investigation involving Kawhi Leonard could introduce one of the strangest free-agency twists the NBA has seen in years.

If the situation escalates, a top-tier superstar could suddenly become available on the open market, which is rare in the current NBA landscape.

Kawhi Leonard's investigation centers on a controversial deal

The controversy stems from an endorsement arrangement between Leonard and the financial company Aspiration. Investigative reporting revealed that Leonard might have signed a deal worth $28 million over four years, with payments tied to his time playing for the Los Angeles Clippers.

The issue is that the agreement reportedly required little or no promotional work, leading critics to describe it as a potential “no-show” job.

Complicating matters further, Clippers owner Steve Ballmer had invested $50 million in Aspiration, raising suspicions that the company may have been used to funnel additional compensation to Leonard outside of his NBA contract.

If true, that would represent a form of salary-cap circumvention.

The Clippers strongly deny any wrongdoing, and the NBA launched an investigation into the matter, rightfully so.

Further actions worsen the situation for the Clippers

The story became even more complicated after Aspiration filed for bankruptcy, and even more questions popped up. Legal filings from the bankruptcy case reportedly showed Leonard’s company still owed $7 million in unpaid payments tied to the agreement.

Other reporting suggested Leonard may have also received additional stock compensation, which could push the total value of the deal much higher than the original $28 million figure.

Those financial connections have fueled speculation across the league. If the NBA determines the arrangement violated salary-cap rules, it could lead to severe penalties.

While extreme, the possibility of voiding a contract does have precedent, and it was not too long ago, and it makes sense. In 2000, the NBA voided the contract of Joe Smith after discovering a secret salary-cap agreement with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The punishment was severe. Smith lost a potential $86 million extension, while Minnesota was fined and stripped of multiple first-round picks. That case remains the clearest example of how aggressively the league can act when cap manipulation is proven.

Lakers could pursue Kawhi Leonard if the unexpected happens

If the NBA were to invalidate Leonard’s contract, he would instantly become one of the most coveted free agents in basketball.

Several contenders would likely enter the race, including the Lakers. The Lakers will have the possibility to accommodate Kawhi, since LeBron will likely retire or play for the Cleveland Cavaliers next season.

The franchise appears to be preparing for a transition into the Dončić era, and adding another elite star would accelerate that process dramatically. When healthy, Leonard remains one of the league’s best two-way players. He has had a very good season so far and keeps the Clippers afloat.

Luka Dončić could gain a championship-level partner

From a basketball standpoint, the pairing would make sense. It would be another great assest next to Austin Reaves.

Dončić dominates offensively as a playmaker and shot creator. Leonard, meanwhile, excels as an efficient scorer who can guard elite wings.

That balance could create a formidable superstar mix, especially since acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo will be very difficult, as reports indicate he is seeking a new place.

For now, the investigation remains unresolved. But if the NBA ultimately determines rules were broken, a bizarre scenario could suddenly unfold. A top-tier player might become available.
And the Lakers would likely be waiting.
