Throughout his entire career, Jayson Tatum has faced so many questions Can he be an alpha on a championship team? Can he be the face of the league? The list goes on and on.
All he has done is win. All he has done is collect accolades. All he has done is lead a very successful era of Boston Celtics basketball.
Now those questions are going to be louder than ever this season, as his co-star Jaylen Brown is no longer wearing the green and white. He is in Philadelphia. It is Tatum’s show for the first time in his career. Now that he is more than a full year removed from his torn achilles, Tatum should get back to his normal self this season and he is ready for it.
Jayson Tatum may not say it’s his team, but he is comfortable leading it
Tatum downplayed the notion that the Celtics are his team at media day, but he did say that he is ready to get back into that leadership role for the roster. He also described his health as “great” and is excited to show off the work that he put on his body this offseason.
Tatum is going to have the ball in his hands more than ever before. When he’s had a usage rate of 35 percent or higher in a game, he’s averaged 34 points per game. He has multiple seasons of averaging 28 or more points per game and will have the chance to do so once again.
Boston is going to look a lot different this coming season, as Paul George and Mitchell Robinson are now in the fold. However, their playstyle will likely remain the same and that bodes very well for Tatum.
Before his injury, he started to control games with his playmaking and was thriving when it came to decision making. Expect him to build on that this season as he will be the Celtics’ offensive engine.
We haven’t seen Tatum with the keys to the car at this level before. That could lead to him hitting a gear in his game that we have not seen yet. And that is a scary thought, given the fact that he was a perennial All-Star and All-NBA first team member up until 2025.
He may not say it, but the fact is that the Celtics are Tatum’s team. The argument can be made that it has always been his team. Now, it is more official, and he has all the skills to deliver the best season of his career.
