Title contender may retool with Sacramento's help
This trade serves as a shot towards the fences: Highly unlikely, but never say never. Boston's in the midst of a financial crisis, while New Orleans (mentioned previously) could use new life for the team. This trade accomplishes all of the above, while retooling Sacramento's roster for the future.
Yes, the Kings come away as clear winners in this deal, something their franchise fails to do in trades. Sacramento moves not one, but two of their top three players, hoping for better depth and defense. Additionally, the team moves several draft picks to receive this haul.
In the backcourt, Holiday's wisdom, defense, and versatility would make him a perfect addition to the Kings. The wing tandem of Jones and Murphy III would form one of the better starting fives alongside Murray and Sabonis.
Boston moves off Holiday's contract (over $30 million) for DeRozan's near $24 million, saving significant cap relief. The team does take a defensive downgrade but gains much-needed offensive talent. With Jayson Tatum out for likely all of next season, DeRozan will be huge next to Jaylen Brown. Offloading salary will be a hot topic this offseason for Boston, as they aim to retool for 2025-26.
Meanwhile, New Orleans shoots for a rebuild, moving two of its best young players for an aging, talented scorer (Zach LaVine). With the new draft assets from this trade, the Pelicans can better prepare to rebuild, potentially moving Zion Williamson and CJ McCollum after this trade, saving cap space in the process. This can be viewed as a puzzling move for the team without following moves.
Each of these deals warrants some consideration by the Kings, and they should answer the phone with an open mind, remaining aggressive if the opportunity presents itself. While these are primary options for Sacramento this offseason, there will be plenty of other chances to make some noise.
Other options remain on the table for the Kings
This offseason will present other avenues for the Kings to pursue as well. It's already reported the team will entertain additions at guard, namely point guard. Among them, Tyus Jones (free agency), Trae Young, and Darius Garland are players the Kings covet. After the recent Desmond Bane trade, expect the Kings to gauge Ja Morant's availability as well. But the Kings could address other needs outside of point guard. The team has expressed interest in acquiring another first-round pick, too.
Jarrett Allen's name has surfaced if the Kings move Domantas Sabonis, as well as other guards like Marcus Smart and Malcolm Brogdon. This offseason is set to be a transcendent one, and the Kings would be wise to get involved as much as possible.
The new regime in Sacramento appears determined to right the wrongs of the past few seasons. Playing in a stacked conference full of contenders, aggressive moves are needed to avoid getting leapfrogged in the standings.
It's now or never, Sacramento.
