The Minnesota Timberwolves are facing a crucial offseason after being eliminated in the second round of the NBA playoffs. Fortunately, the Wolves may have the perfect star trade target to pair with Anthony Edwards.
The Dallas Mavericks are apparently hitting the reset button on their franchise after hiring Masai Ujiri and firing Nico Harrison and Jason Kidd.
Therefore, now may be the right time for the Wolves to target star Kyrie Irving. Irving's value may be at an all-time low due to him missing all of this season with an ACL tear and being 34 years old.
The Timberwolves will have to be bold in the trade market and take a chance on Irving in the hopes that he'll thrive in Minnesota.
Note * The Timberwolves can't trade their 2026 first until draft night and their 2026 first until early July, but the deal could be agreed to before then.
Proposed trade would send Kyrie Irving to the Minnesota Timberwolves
The proposed trade would send Timberwolves star Julius Randle to the Mavericks along with two first-round picks for Irving. That would be a major gamble for the Wolves, who would be shipping out two firsts when they already have little in the way of draft assets.
Then again, if healthy, Irving would give them a massive upgrade at point guard and help shoulder the offensive load. They would also be getting rid of Randall, who struggled this postseason.
They also have a ready-made replacement in Naz Reid, who can start at power forward for them.
For the Mavericks, they'd be getting an additional first in this year's draft as well as a 2033 first to take back Randle and ship out Irving.
Would the Timberwolves and Dallas Mavericks agree to the deal?
It's hard to imagine the Timberwolves saying no to a deal that would give them a star point guard. Considering they were playing 38-year-old Mike Conley in the playoffs, having Irving would be a massive upgrade.
Yes, it would cost them two first-round picks, but it would make them meaningfully better. Swapping out Randle, replacing him with Reid, and upgrading at point guard in one fell swoop would be a no-brainer for Minnesota.
As for the Mavericks, they don't have much in the way of picks, and getting two for Irving would be a great start towards rebuilding their draft stockpile. With the Mavs unlikely to be a playoff team next season, taking back Randle shouldn't matter all that much.
He could always rehabilitate his value and become tradable later on. In the meantime, I could see the Mavericks as well as the Timberwolves agreeing to the proposed trade.
