Five games into his sophomore season and Dallas Mavericks rising star Cooper Flagg is already turning heads with his strong play. Flagg is averaging a stellar 26.8 points 6.0 rebounds, 6.6 assists, and 2.6 steals.
With only a few games into the season, it could be a sign that he is already taking a massive leap in just his sophomore year. Going from averaging 21 points to nearly 27 a game would be a massive and put him and the conversation for best young players in the NBA.
While he was already in that conversation, he could be thrust to the the forefront of that discussion. His play is already translating into to wins for the Mavericks having gone 4-2 thus far.
Cooper Flagg is already making a massive leap in his second season
Just the fact that Mavericks have Flagg is a huge deal. Remember, they weren't expected to end up with a number one overall pick in last year's draft but lucked into it after previously trading Luka Doncic.
If Flagg continues to play like he has, then it might make Mavs fans forget that
Doncic was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. Better still, Flagg is just 19 years old compared to Doncic, who is 27.
Perhaps Nico Harrison was onto something after all. Yeah, I'm not ready to go that far but the Mavericks have clearly found their future with Flagg, and his play early on proves it. He gives the Mavericks a building block, though much of their current roster is still holdovers from the Doncic era.
The return of Kyrie Irving should help boost their playoff hopes, though their postseason dreams will be based primarily on Flagg. If his play to start this season holds up, then Dallas could be the surprise team of the NBA this season.
