NBA Stars #2: LeBron James

Lakers superstar LeBron James is easily the highest-profile player on this list of high-profile players but his situation is almost more complicated. LeBron has stated that he hopes to play with his son, Bronny James, who will be eligible for the 2024 NBA Draft. With LeBron able to become a free agent after next season, he could easily leave the Lakers and sign with whoever drafts Bronny.

Imagine Utah or San Antonio drafting Bronny, knowing that they would also be able to sign the NBA’s all-time leading scorer too, presumably for cheap. Despite the likely downgrade in terms of talent and market, that could be hard for the Lakers to beat but they will definitely try after successfully retooling this summer.

If they can make another deep playoff run, then it might be hard for LeBron to turn down a chance to compete for another championship. Still, it is a definite possibility based on LeBron’s own words. Then there is also the possibility that LeBron decides to retire. After all, he’ll be playing his 21st season and, presumably, another long playoff run.

There is no guarantee that he will even return for year number 22. Things change; people suddenly play and feel their age. Whether he considers jumping ship, retiring, or returning, two of those three options don’t favor the Lakers, making him a candidate to bolt.
