NBA Stars #3: DeMar DeRozan

After a strong start to his career in Chicago, Bulls star DeMar DeRozan could opt to jump ship next summer. Although there have been some recent rumblings about him signing a contract extension to stay with the team, they could soon look to rebuild. After all, even with three all-stars, they only made the play-in tournament last season. With a bad start to 2023–24, Chicago might actually consider trading DeRozan, Zach LaVine, or both.

Then again, they re-signed Nikola Vucevic over the offseason, though that was probably partly to keep their options open if they did decide to do a fire sale. Contract negotiations with DeRozan could be for the same reason, though he is 34, and adding at least a couple of seasons to his deal would mean he’d be under contract until he’s 37.

Another team probably wouldn’t be willing to trade for him, especially if he is making $30+ million in his mid-30s. A seeming safer bet would be that the two sides fail to come to an agreement and the Bulls trade him near the trade deadline. Unless he were to get moved to the team of his choosing, he would definitely still be a candidate to bolt next summer.
