NBA Stars #5: Klay Thompson

Following the breakdown of contract negotiations, Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson may actually hit free agency next summer. That would be a surprising development, especially considering that he has been the second-best player during their Big Three era. Not only that, but he is one of the more popular players in the NBA. However, not reaching an agreement opens the door for him to leave free agency.

Would he really leave Golden State, and would the Warriors really let him go after managing to come to deals with Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Green? I’m skeptical of both. Thompson is likely seeking at least $30 million a season, which is pretty much the starting point for a star, with the contract length likely being the biggest issue. Thompson is 33, so a 5-year deal is probably out of the question. But what about a four-year deal, and what if he is seeking the maximum?

Odds are that Thompson and Golden State eventually come to terms on a new long-term deal that would keep Thompson in the Bay Area for the remainder of his Hall of Fame career. However, if they can’t, then teams such as the Philadelphia 76ers could be chopping at the bit to try and lure the sharpshooter away from the Warriors.
