NBA Free Agency: the best and worst contract re-ups thus far
By Eric Fritts
Harrison Barnes – 3 years/$54 million – Sacramento Kings
Harrison Barnes has had an eclectic NBA career, he has won an NBA finals, lost an NBA Finals, and bounced around a little bit since. His experience and presence were undoubtedly valuable to the Kings this past season as they turned their franchise around, but it felt like his time there was probably done.
Barnes significantly underperformed against his former team, the Golden State Warriors, in the playoffs averaging only 10.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, and less than one assist per game. His three-point shot nearly disappeared, dropping to only 24 percent. Barnes wasn’t expected to be a star in round one, but he didn’t prove to be reliable either. Granted, decent wings are hard to find, but with Barnes being 31 years old, and possibly on a decline, the Kings might have been better off letting him walk.
Barnes has been with Sacramento since 2019, he’s seen the team shift from bad to good and was definitely a contributing player to that, which might be why he got a decent resigning here. And overall it isn’t a devastating contract as much as it feels like they just could have done better.
