San Antonio Spurs selected Victor Wembanyama with the first pick of the 2023 NBA Draft.

Brooklyn, New York, was the center of attention in the basketball world on Thursday night.

After all the waiting, the hype, and the drama, the 2023 NBA Draft has begun. As expected, the San Antonio Spurs selected 19-year-old phenom Victor Wembanyama with the first pick in the draft.

The 7-foot-4 super prospect spent the past season playing for Metropolitans 92 in his native France’s LNB Pro A league.

There have been many players with tall and lanky frames who came in and went into the NBA. However, not all with this build are as dominant as Wembanyama. In his most recent season in France, he averaged 21.6 points, 10.4 rebounds, and three blocks, leading the league in these three statistics. He did so while shooting 47 percent from the field.

Wembanyama has been hailed by many as the most anticipated draft prospect since LeBron James in 2003. The expectations are through the roof, and there is no better place for him to begin than in San Antonio under Gregg Popovich’s guidance.

The Spurs have previously succeeded by drafting big men with the first pick with David Robinson in 1987 and Tim Duncan in 1997. They also have a good history of drafting foreign talents such as Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker. The organization hopes to repeat these feats with Wembanyama. With the right pieces around him, they can replicate that success.
