NBA Star #11: Draymond Green

Golden State Warriors power forward Draymond Green ranks as one of the more interesting free agents this offseason. Over his 11-season career, all with the Warriors, Draymond Green has established himself as a versatile weapon. Although he is not a star in the traditional sense, Green is a four-time All-Star due primarily to his playmaking and defensive ability.

He has definitely fallen off in recent years, however, lessening his impact to the point that it doesn’t always make up for his shortcomings. Even then, Golden State is considered likely to retain him, but it is still far from a done deal. Barring another trade to clear up salary, the Warriors could be adding $20–$25 million a year going forward to a team that already has the largest payroll in the NBA.

With the new CBA, they might think twice about offering him such a large contract, particularly if it’s a three- or four-year deal. That might open the door for another team, such as the Dallas Mavericks or Miami Heat, to make a move to acquire him. Neither team is projected to have cap space, though they could attempt to seek out a sign-and-trade. That would depend largely on the Warriors, and without other obvious fits, Green might be eager to get a deal done with Golden State.
