NBA Free Agent Center #3: Kristaps Porzingis

Center Kristaps Porzingis was acquired at last year’s trade deadline in what proved to be a worthwhile gamble for the Washington Wizards. After being cast out of Dallas, Porzingis had a resurgent season for the Wizards. Now, he’ll have a chance to capitalize on his strong season in free agency. He is generally expected to re-sign with the Wizards, who, while not particularly good this season, at least had a big three of sorts with Kyle Kuzma and Bradley Beal.

Of course, it wouldn’t be summertime without rumors of a Beal trade, and if he is actually dealt, that would jeopardize Porzingis’ return. He would potentially have other suitors, though perhaps not as many as some would expect. After all, the majority of the teams with cap space appear unlikely to be in the market for a center.

For instance, Detroit has several young options at center; San Antonio is set to select Wembanyama in the NBA draft; and Houston has a rising star in Alperin Sengun. Porzingis’ extensive injury history could also affect his free agent market, with teams shying away from signing him to a long-term deal despite him only being 27.

Even if Washington plans to bring back Beal and re-sign Porzingis, he may not have leverage in contract negotiations with few, if any, teams willing to offer as much as the Wizards. Still, I expect him to stay in Washington.
