Perfect Fit #5: San Antonio Spurs and Amen Thompson

Of all of the lottery prospects up for grabs this year, the one who will need a perfect fit most is Amen Thompson. As a lead ball-handler who doesn’t have a great outside shot but dominates athletically and with the ball in his hands, Thompson will need a team that can guarantee him that role and helps him reach his ceiling.

Enter the San Antonio Spurs. The team tanked for Wemby this year, turning over a majority of minutes to young guards, wings, and bigs. While that helped to juice the development of players like Tre Jones, Jeremy Sochan, and Zach Collins, it didn’t lead to a lot of wins, as the team lacked a reliable perimeter creator.

Thompson will enter the NBA as a top-ten athlete and he won’t be tenth. He is an outrageous leaper, a blur when he heads toward the rim, and brings the type of athleticism that the Spurs don’t have on the roster.

With great wings like Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell to receive his skip passes, bigs like Sochan and Collins down low to shore up his defensive issues and catch his lobs, and one of the best coaches in NBA history, there’s no more perfect fit for Thompson to reach his sky-high ceiling than San Antonio.
