Bradley Beal, Washington Wizards

The incident where Bradley Beal got into a fracas with a fan towards the end of the season wasn’t pretty. But it probably isn’t the tipping factor in the relationship between the superstar and the only team he’s ever played for, the Washington Wizards.

Beal has repeatedly expressed his commitment to Washington and rebuffed trade rumors, which seem to follow him around every year. Last offseason, he signed a five-year, $251 million supermax extension.

Still, during his media availability following the season, the frustration Beal is experiencing was palpable. While again reitering his desire to stick around, he said he was frustrated, angry and “expressed that to the necessary voices and people who need to hear it, for sure” (H/T Bleacher Report).

Beal is still a superstar and he’s averaged 23.2 points per game in each of the past two seasons. But his time as an elite player may start to dwindle faster than people expect – the Wizards aren’t capitalizing on his peak.

The elite guard has missed the postseason in four of the past five years. It’s now been six seasons since his Wizards have won a playoff series. Despite the presence of stars Kristaps Porzingis and Kyle Kuzma, it doesn’t feel like Washington is getting closer to glory.

Beal is a subject of the rumor mill every summer. Maybe this season, he evolves from subject to active participant.
