3 defensive-minded free agents Dallas should be watching closely in the playoffs

3. Jevon Carter, Milwaukee Bucks
Sticking with the Bucks, Jevon Carter is another player the Mavericks should have on their radar in the playoffs. The guard just put together the best season of his career and has been a major piece for the Bucks off of the bench behind Jrue Holiday. Carter has a player option worth $2.2 million looming for next season, which he is bound to decline, especially if he shows out in the playoffs. He’d be a big pickup for the Dallas Mavericks in their search for more defense next season.
Even dating back to his college days, Carter has made a sizeable impact defensively by picking up opposing ball handlers the full length of the floor. He pesters them to no end and makes it rather difficult to get shots off, which has made him a valuable piece to this Milwaukee defense. On top of that, he’s having a breakout year offensively by averaging eight points per game while shooting 42.1 percent from three. A player like that could help the Mavericks tremendously next season and beyond.
If Carter does indeed opt out of his contract to enter free agency, his market will be robust, so the Mavericks will face some stiff competition. Yet, that should not stop them from trying to add their new potential backup point guard if he hits the open market in NBA free agency this summer.
