With news that the Atlanta Hawks could be open to moving All-Star Trae Young this summer, teams are likely lining up to trade for him. That means it could be open season for speculation surrounding Young and the Hawks. Moreover, the Miami Heat may be one of the teams that may make a serious run at trading for Young:

It is very much in line with Pat Riley and the Heat’s MO. The Heat are known for pursuing stars and are often in the mix when they become available. That being said, Miami is limited in regards to draft assets, putting them behind other asset-rich teams like the New York Knicks and Oklahoma City Thunder.

Can the Miami Heat pull off a trade for Trae Young?

In regards to what Miami can offer Atlanta, Tyler Herro, Caleb Martin, two unprotected first-round picks as well as three first-round pick swaps could make up a potential Heat package. Although the Heat don’t have as many assets as other teams, that would be a pretty good starting point and a more competitive offer than it looks. After all, while Young is certainly talented, there may only be a few teams that pursue him.

For instance, the restrictive new CBA means that other teams subject to the luxury tax will be limited in what they can offer. That means teams such as the Lakers, Clippers, and Bulls would be out of the running for Young, especially since they don’t have a talented young piece like Herro to offer up.

On the other hand, several bad teams, such as the Spurs, Rockets, and Pistons, have intriguing prospects and plenty of picks but probably won’t pursue him either. That’s because they aren’t anywhere near competing and thus will likely continue building through the draft.

That leaves only a handful of teams left to vie for Young. Then there is the question of who Young would rather play for. Since he is under contract for the next four seasons, he has limited input. Even then, the Hawks may let him choose which team to join if they get several similarly competitive offers. If that’s the case, then Miami may have the leg up on other teams because, well, it’s Miami.

Next. This wild Mav and Pelicans trade is crazy enough to work. dark

Ultimately, Miami does have a chance to land Young if Atlanta really shops him this summer. If the Heat does acquire Young, then they could return to title contention.
