Under-the-Radar Prospect #10: Tucker DeVries, Drake

Here’s an example of a player that you should not judge based on one NCAA tournament performance. DeVries did a great job of leading Drake to March Madness, but he had a nightmare shooting performance against the Miami Hurricanes.

While some have worried that his struggles against Miami’s length portend a rough adjustment to the NBA, it’s unfair to extrapolate to that degree especially when DeVries has great size for a shooting guard and a well-documented shooting touch.

DeVries hit 37 percent of his threes while taking seven per game, an excellent number for a 6’7” wing, and one that solidifies his reputation as a plus shooter with size. That combination is one that the NBA can’t get enough of at the moment and it’s hard to imagine a team saying “no” to this type of shooting:

DeVries’ athletic drawbacks and offensive limitations will likely keep him out of the first round, but he’d be a second-round steal for any NBA team.

His shooting will keep him on a roster for a long time, while his size gives him the flexibility to play in big or small lineups. Given the success of players like Duncan Robinson and Max Strus, it’s easy to see the path that DeVries could take for an NBA team.
