The Sacramento Kings visited the LA Clippers on Friday in Russell Westbrook’s debut as a Clipper. By the end of the double-overtime thriller, that would be far from the headline of the game.

With both teams on fire for the entire contest, there were several unforgettable performances as the Sacramento Kings came out on top 176-175 in one of the wildest basketball games ever played. Needless to say, the new era of defense being optional was exemplified in the most extreme way in this one, but it still didn’t quite measure up to the highest-scoring game ever played in NBA history.

What was the highest-scoring game in NBA History?

On December 13, 1983, the Detroit Pistons defeated the Denver Nuggets 186-184 in triple overtime to record the highest-scoring game in NBA history. It totaled 370 points, which still clears the 351 points scored in Friday’s epic showdown. That said, it’s clear that this game would have surpassed that mark if it had only gone one more overtime period.

In that game, Kiki Vandeweghe led all scorers with 51 points while Alex English had 47. Also, four players scored 40 or more points in that historic game (an NBA record), with Isiah Thomas tallying 47 while John Long also added 41.

In Friday’s matchup, De’Aaron Fox (42), Malik Monk (45), and Kawhi Leonard (44) all cleared the 40-plus mark while Paul George contributed 34. Both teams ended up with one of the top five scoring games in NBA history as a result.

The California clash will likely remain one of the most prolific offensive games in history for decades. While it didn’t quite catch the 370 points reached in 1983, it’s going to be a memorable game for years to come.
