Christian Wood – Dallas Mavericks

Dallas Mavericks Center Christian Wood is averaging 17.8 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. Those would be impressive numbers for a full-time starter. However, Wood is one of the first players off the Mavericks’ bench every night. He has become an important part of the team’s offensive output and a trustworthy defensive anchor during his time on the floor.

Dallas recently made headlines when they executed a blockbuster trade for perennial All-Star Kyrie Irving. Pairing him with MVP candidate Luka Doncic means the team now boasts one of the best backcourts in the league and is officially in “win now” mode. However, two players alone cannot carry a team to a championship. If the Mavericks are going to become legitimate contenders they must get consistent contributions from the other starters and the key members of the second unit. So far this season, Woods has not disappointed.

The NBA’s Sixth Man of The Year award always goes to a player who makes his team better in one way or another. Malcolm Brogdon, Tyrese Maxey, Malik Monk, and Christian Wood are each player who makes a positive impact on their team’s chances of winning and have helped sustain a winning culture for their respective franchises.

As the All-Star break approaches the playoff picture is beginning to become more evident. Whichever of these players helps their team optimize their seeding while continuing to put up impressive numbers will walk away with the award. Until then, the NBA’s fanbase will continue to watch and be entertained by their exploits on the court night in and night out.
