1960’s Decade

  • 1960-1961 = (LAL) Hot Rod Hundley – 11.0 PPG
  • 1961-1962 = (LAL) Frank Selvy/(SYR) Dolph Schayes – 14.7 PPG
  • 1962-1963 = (STL) Lenny Wilkens – 11.8 PPG
  • 1963-1964 = (NYK) Tom Gola – 9.1 PPG
  • 1964-1965 = (NYK) Johnny Green – 11.0 PPG
  • 1965-1966 = (BOS) Bill Russell – 12.9 PPG
  • 1966-1967 = (LAL) Darrall Imhoff – 10.7 PPG
  • 1967-1968 = (SFW) Clyde Lee – 11.9 PPG
  • 1968-1969 = (BOS) Bill Russell – 9.9 PPG
  • 1969-1970 = (ATL) Bill Bridges – 14.8 PPG

In the next decade, we have a couple of members from the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team on the list. This includes players such as Dolph Schayes, Lenny Wilkens and Bill Russell, the latter who was the only duplicate throughout this 10-year span.

Russell was never known for being a higher-volume scorer. In fact, he never averaged more than 20 points per game for a single season in his career. What he lacks in that department, he more than made up for with his defense, rebounding, and leadership that led him to win a record 11 NBA championships as a player.

The list also includes three former Lakers in Hot Rud Hundley, Frank Selvy, and Darrall Imhoff. Additionally, two Knicks players in Tom Gola and Johnny Green topped this category as well.

1970’s Decade

  • 1970-1971 = (BAL) Wes Unseld – 14.1 PPG
  • 1971-1972 = (BAL) Wes Unseld – 13.0 PPG
  • 1972-1973 = (BAL) Wes Unseld – 12.5 PPG
  • 1973-1974 = (GSW) Nate Thurmond – 13.0 PPG
  • 1974-1975 = (WSB) Wes Unseld – 9.2 PPG
  • 1975-1976 = (KCK) Scott Wedman – 15.5 PPG
  • 1976-1977 = (IND) Don Buse – 8.0 PPG
  • 1977-1978 = (DEN) Bobby Jones – 14.5 PPG
  • 1978-1979 = (SEA) Jack Sikma ->15.6 PPG
  • 1979-1980 = (POR) Kermit Washington – 13.4 PPG

Now we get into the ‘Wes Unseld’ era. Throughout his career, Unseld was only honored to the NBA All-Star game five times, with four of them having the lowest scoring average among everyone selected.

However, combining Wes Unseld’s four years in this decade with Nate Thurmond in the 1973-1974 season makes a streak of five straight years that players from the NBA’s 75th Anniversary team have made the list once again. Like Russell, both were known for their defense. Thurmond was the better rebounder, while Unseld was the better passer between each other.

The rest of the list for the 1970s consists of champions with the exception of Kermit Washington.

Don Buse, who makes this list for his effort in the 1976-1977 NBA season, won his in the ABA. The season he made this list was also the first since the league merged with the NBA.
