Spurs depth: Center

  1. Zach Collins
  2. Charles Bassey Jr. (two-way player)
  3. Khem Birch
  4. Gorgui Dieng

With Jakob Poeltl having been traded back to the Toronto Raptors, the Spurs will have a new starting center. Zach Collins is the most obvious candidate and has played very well in his backup role this season. Collins is a skilled scorer in the paint and is slowly developing into a stretch-five.

Defensively, he’s actually had a bigger impact than Poeltl this season, according to advanced stats, after having made significant strides on that end. Bassey Jr., who is on a two-way contract, will likely rejoin the Spurs during the final third of the season.

He earned time at backup center when Collins missed an extended period and played well. He’ll almost certainly fill in for Collins now and see significant playing time. Birch was a salary throw-in in the Poeltl trade and will get his chances, but the team likely won’t stray much from Collins and Bassey Jr. Lastly, we have Dieng. Dieng is strictly a locker-room player for the Spurs, though he’s looked pretty good when he’s been given a chance to play.
