Spurs depth: Shooting Guard

  1. Devin Vassell
  2. Romeo Langford
  3. Malaki Branham

Spurs starting shooting guard Devin Vassell is currently out indefinitely with a knee injury. That’s too bad because Vassell was having a breakout season, proving that he’s far more than a three-and-D player. With the Spurs well out of play-in range, they have no incentive to rush him back, so it’s hard to say whether we’ll see him again this season.

That isn’t all bad news for the Spurs, who without Vassell have lost straight 11 games and are currently one of the three worst teams in the NBA. That would put them in a three-way tie for the highest lottery odds.

Langford was a throw-in in the Derrick White trade but has saved his flailing career with his play thus far this season. While the former lottery pick is never going to be a star and probably won’t ever be a full-time starter either, he has earned a lot of playing time and proven to be a good defender and a capable slasher. Although he is technically third in the depth chart, he’ll likely still play consistently over the final leg of the season.

2022 first-round pick Malaki Branham has already begun receiving more playing time. Branham is the second of the team’s three first-round picks from the previous year’s draft and has played much better of late.
