2023 NBA Trade Deadline Bold Prediction No.5 – The Los Angeles Lakers will keep their first-round picks to try and get a big fish this offseason

The Los Angeles Lakers are arguably the team that has been placed under the biggest microscope in trade talks this season. At 19-23, the Lakers are 13th in the Western Conference, and it is no secret that they could use some reinforcements via trade.

They have been linked to no shortage of players on the trade market, including a few already mentioned on this list, but the big question is whether or not they are willing to include their 2027 and 2029 first-rounders in any moves. To this point, the Lakers clearly have not been willing to move them in any deal, as they could be saving them for something else.

While the Lakers could benefit mightily from a big mid-season trade, it appears they may keep their picks until the offseason. Per Marc Stein (Subscription required), there is belief in rival front offices that the Lakers may keep their prized first rounds picks in case Zach LaVine or Bradley Beal hit the trade market this offseason.

Although there is no guarantee that either player becomes available, the Lakers would surely be willing to trade those picks for either of those players. It appears that they are looking ahead at the bigger picture rather than prioritizing a move right now, meaning that the two first-rounders may stay in LA until at least the offseason.

The Lakers could certainly still make a move or two at the deadline, but those two first-round picks may be out of the question. Of course, that is just speculation, but Stein’s reporting makes it seem like a feasible avenue unless a surefire star becomes available between now and February 9.
