5. G Jalen Brunson, New York Knicks

Many questioned if the New York Knicks overpaid to snag Jalen Brunson from the Dallas Mavericks in free agency. He’s proving to be worth every dollar, though, and has an outside chance at being an All-Star for the first time.

The veteran has been a steadying force for the franchise in his first season, providing consistency day in and day out. He’s arguably the best true point guard the Knicks have trotted out in years.

Stepping out of Luka Doncic’s shadow in the Lone Star State, Brunson is having a career year. He’s averaging 20.8 points and 6.2 assists per game, both career bests. He’s shooting 37.3 percent from three – right in line with his career average – so his scoring numbers could get a boost if his shot rounds into the better form he’s shown before.

Brunson’s usage has never been higher, but his turnover percentage is hovering near career lows, showing just how secure he is with the rock. He’s also getting to the free throw line at a rate drastically higher than any previous season when compared to his field goal attempts.

At the moment, Brunson ranks in the top 20 in numerous statistical categories, including free throw percentage, assists per game, assist percentage, and win shares. He’s never ranked in the top 20 in any of those categories for a full campaign.

Brunson’s effect on the Knicks is the biggest impact he’s made, but he’s also been flat-out great this season and is deserving of being named one of the All-Stars for the first time.
