Rebuilding teams hunting for new talent are usually not much fun to watch, and this season, some of those teams are especially desperate to clinch a top-two draft pick. At the moment, the San Antonio Spurs have the fourth-worst record in the league and are at the very bottom of the Western Conference, as they find themselves in a split between yearning to add Victor Wembanyama or Scoot Henderson to their roster and already having some young talent that is performing well.

One of those players is Devin Vassell, who is bringing some talent and fun energy to the Spurs’ games. Together with Keldon Johnson and Tre Jones, among others, he offers fans a glimpse of what the team’s future might look like.

Before his professional career, Vassell was pretty much unknown until he took a massive leap in his sophomore year at Florida State University, which eventually led to him being a lottery pick in the 2020 draft. He entered the draft labeled as a solid 3-and-D wing who had the potential to become a crafty on-ball defender and shooting threat in the NBA, but not much more. In his third season, he is now outliving those expectations, showing that he can be much more.
